mooMark and Japan’s Akiba Farm Holdings Sign Landmark MoU for High-Tech Dairy Transformation

In a major bilateral push for agricultural modernization, Indian digital dairy pioneer mooMark has officially signed a milestone Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s premier artisanal dairy legacy company, Akiba Farm Holdings.
Supported and backed directly by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the joint venture merges cutting-edge tech logistics with traditional agricultural expertise. The partnership is engineered to establish an advanced R&D framework that will introduce precision Japanese feeding protocols to India’s massive livestock sector and scale up premium, value-added consumer dairy operations.
Synergy: Scale Meets 140 Years of Heritage
The cross-border alliance capitalizes on the highly complementary strengths of both enterprises, aiming to bridge the gap between smallholder supply chains and high-yield, premium market segments:
  • mooMark’s Digital Infrastructure: As a tech-driven agritech leader in India, mooMark brings an expansive digital network that spans 3.5 million Indian dairy farmers across 17 states. This includes automated milk collection endpoints, IoT-enabled chilling infrastructure, and cloud-based farmer payment and tracking systems
  • Akiba’s Artisanal Expertise: Akiba Farm Holdings brings 140 years of specialized heritage in premium Japanese cattle breeding, state-of-the-art cold-chain logistics, and world-renowned artisanal processing methods
Boosting Yields: Introducing Japanese TMR Feeding Protocols
A core operational pillar of the MoU is the systematic optimization of cattle nutrition across India’s rural milk sheds. To combat inconsistent milk yields and volatile nutritional intake among Indian cattle, the partnership will introduce customized Total Mixed Ration (TMR) feeding systems.
  • The TMR System: TMR blends forage, bypass proteins, grains, vitamins, and minerals into a uniform, single feed mass. This prevents cattle from selectively eating only certain ingredients, ensuring that every bite delivers a perfectly balanced ration
  • Rumen Health and Optimization: By stabilizing rumen fermentation, the TMR protocols are projected to significantly boost per-capita milk yields and standardize crucial Milk Fat and Solid-Not-Fat (SNF) metrics at the farm gate
  • Localized Adaptation: The venture will adapt Japanese feed formulations to utilize locally available Indian agricultural byproducts, keeping input costs highly economical for smallholder farmers
Commercial Expansion: The Premium Gelato Innovation Lab
To directly translate improved milk quality into high-margin revenue streams, the MoU outlines the immediate construction of a joint Dairy Innovation Lab.
The laboratory’s primary commercial objective is the development of ultra-premium, artisanal gelato and value-added frozen desserts tailored for India’s booming urban consumer classes. By combining the rich, high-fat profiles generated by the new TMR feeding protocols with Akiba’s centuries-old processing recipes, the venture aims to create a premium, traceable farm-to-table brand. This brand will bypass traditional commodity pricing structures, directly boosting the profitability of participating rural cooperatives.
Strategic Alignment and Regulatory Backing
The formal involvement of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) elevates the mooMark-Akiba venture from a standard corporate deal to a strategic focal point of Indo-Japan agricultural cooperation.

AHI Opinion: METI’s financial and regulatory backing will help streamline technology transfers, secure international cold-chain equipment subsidies, and ensure that the digital scaling models developed can serve as a repeatable blueprint for sustainable, climate-smart dairy farming across developing economies in South Asia.
