Kashmir Launches ‘Milk Queen’ Initiative with High-Yield Swiss Goats to Transform Dairy Productivity

Kashmir has launched an ambitious livestock development initiative aimed at strengthening regional dairy production through the introduction of high-yield Swiss goat breeds, marking a significant step toward modernization of the region’s smallholder dairy sector.

The program, popularly referred to as the “Milk Queen” project, seeks to improve milk productivity, farmer incomes, and livestock efficiency by introducing superior genetic stock capable of producing substantially higher milk yields than traditional local breeds.

Officials associated with the initiative stated that the imported Swiss goats are expected to play a transformative role in addressing productivity gaps that continue to affect dairy farmers across the region. The breeds have been selected for their strong lactation performance, adaptability, and ability to generate higher milk output per animal.

The move comes at a time when India’s dairy and livestock sectors are increasingly focusing on genetic improvement, scientific breeding, and productivity-led growth to meet rising demand for milk and dairy products.

Focus on Productivity and Farmer Income

Authorities involved in the project emphasized that improving per-animal productivity remains critical for enhancing the economics of dairy farming, particularly in regions where land availability and fodder resources are limited. By introducing genetically superior dairy goats, the government aims to help farmers:

  • generate higher milk output,
  • improve profitability,
  • optimize feed utilization,
  • and build more sustainable livestock operations.

Industry experts note that high-yield breeds can significantly improve dairy economics for smallholder farmers by increasing returns without requiring proportional increases in herd size. The initiative is also expected to support diversification within the dairy sector, particularly among smaller and marginal farmers who rely heavily on livestock-based income.

Scientific Breeding and Modern Livestock Practices

Officials described the “Milk Queen” project as part of a broader effort to modernize livestock farming in Kashmir through:

  • scientific breeding programs,
  • improved animal management,
  • veterinary support,
  • and farmer education initiatives.

The program aims to gradually shift dairy farming from traditional low-productivity systems toward more organized and scientifically managed models. Alongside the introduction of Swiss goats, authorities are also providing:

  • technical training,
  • livestock management guidance,
  • nutritional support,
  • and breeding assistance

to ensure farmers are able to effectively manage the new breeds and maximize productivity outcomes. Experts believe such integrated support systems are essential to ensure that improved genetics translate into long-term economic gains at the farm level.
