African Swine Fever (ASF) situation update in Asia & Pacific Source, Credits – FAO

Overview

Hazard: African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease affecting pigs and wild boar with up to 100% case fatality rate.

ASF reported countries since August 2018: China, Mongolia, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, The Philippines, Republic of Korea, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, India, Malaysia, Bhutan, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Notes: Dotted line represents approximately the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir agreed upon by India and Pakistan. The final status of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet been agreed upon by the parties.

Situation update

Mongolia: Since its first report on 15 January 2019, Mongolia reported two waves of ASF outbreaks in 2019 and 2023-24, both at the northern parts of the country and in Ulaanbaatar. On 8 January 2025, a new outbreak started in Bayankhutag sum (district) in central east of the country.

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea: The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the occurrence of the first ASF outbreak in Chagang-do on 23 May 2019.

Republic of Korea: Since the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) confirmed the first ASF outbreak on 17 September 2019, ASF was detected in  53 domestic pig farms: Gyeonggi-do (24), Incheon City (5), Gangwon-do (19), and Gyeongsangbuk-do (5). The latest outbreak occurred on a pig farm in Paju City, Gyeonggi-do on 16 July 2025. As of 23 July 2025, ASF virus infection have been detected in 4 257 wild boars in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Busan City, and Daegu City; the six most recent wild boar cases were reported only in very northern areas i.e. Yeoncheon County in Gyeonggi-do (3) in June, and in Chuncheon City and Hwacheon County in Gangwon-do (2) in July, according to media; for more than one month no ASF cases confirmed in Chungcheongbuk-do or Gyeongsangbuk-do where majority of the cases were reported from before the wild fire while over 1 000 wild boars were tested during the period.

China: Since the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) confirmed the first outbreak in Liaoning Province on 3 August 2018, ASF was detected in 32 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities/special administrative region. An ASF outbreak occurred on 16/07/2025 in a village in Napo County, Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region; over 200 pigs died, and 586 pigs were culled. The immediate previous ASF outbreak in the mainland China was reported in 2022 in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. A pig carcass found on the Cihu Sanjiaobao beach of the Jinning Township, Kinmen County, Taiwan Province, tested positive for ASF. The gene sequences showed that the P72 and the B602L genes were 100% similar to the ASF genotype II virus prevalent in the mainland. For the past seven years (from August 2018 to 21 July 2025), Taiwan Province tested 8 903 pork products as part of border control, of which 930 (10%) tested positive for ASF this included products originated from mainland China (787), Viet Nam (107), Thailand (35), and Malaysia (1).

The Philippines: Since the Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed the first outbreak in July 2019, ASF outbreaks have occurred in 76 of its 82 provinces; as of 11 July 2025, 28 barangays in 12 municipalities of six provinces reported having active ASF cases, of which 14 barangays (50%) were in Region VIII (Eastern Visayas). Media reported new outbreaks in Obayan Barangay, Samar Province on 4 August 2025.

Malaysia: 
The first ASF outbreaks were confirmed in February 2021 in Sabah State on Borneo. The last confirmed case was in wild boar in Selangor State in May 2025. ASF was confirmed in Penang State, in four pig farms in Tasek Gelugor District, on 12 July 2025 and on 27 July; a total of 1 083 pigs have been destroyed. Media wrote samples from farms in North Seberang Perai, South Seberang Perai and Southwest districts of Penang State also tested positive for ASF.

Singapore: The first cases of ASF was confirmed in February 2023 in wild boar carcasses found in forested areas and nature parks. In April 2023, ASF was detected at a slaughterhouse in carcasses of live pigs imported from Bulan Island, Indonesia.

Indonesia: Since the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) reported an ASF outbreak in North Sumatra Province in 2019, ASF has been officially reported in 32 out of 34 provinces on Sumatera, Bangka Belitung, Riau, Java, Kalimantan, Bali, Sunda, Sulawesi and New Guinea Islands. ASF cases in wild boar population have been reported in Sumatera Island since 2020 and also on Kalimantan and Sulawesi Islands.

Timor-Leste: After the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries announced the confirmation of ASF outbreak on 27 September 2019, ASF spread to almost all villages within one year. From December 2021 and March 2023, there were small outbreaks of mortality 100-pigs level and were controlled through quick diagnosis and response.

Papua New Guinea: The National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) confirmed ASF outbreaks in Southern Highlands Province in March 2020. The status of ASF in Papua New Guinea was as follows: i) infected zone – Hela, Southern Highlands, Western Highlands, Enga and Jiwaka provinces; ii) buffer zone – Eastern Highlands and Simbu provinces; iii) non-infected zone – the rest of the country.

Viet Nam: Since the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) confirmed its first ASF outbreak on 19 February 2019, all provinces/municipalities experienced outbreaks. The number of outbreaks has decreased from >6 000 outbreaks (2019) to 1 256 (2022), 714 in 2023, but increased to 1 609 outbreaks in 2024. In 2025, ASF outbreaks have been confirmed in all provinces/cities, as of 6 August at lease 1 019 outbreaks have been recorded, and more than 160 000 pigs have been destroyed; and in 32 out of 34* provinces/cities have/had confirmed ASF outbreaks in the past 21 days. The number of pigs culled during the month of July was approx. 73 500 pigs, which have surpassed the cumulative total recorded from January to June this year. *On 1 July 2025, Viet Nam consolidated provinces/cities from 63 to 34.

Lao People’s Democratic Republic: Since the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry confirmed the first outbreak in Salavan Province on 20 June 2019, ASF outbreaks were reported in all 18 provinces. On 19 February 2025, an ASF outbreak was confirmed in Thathon District, Xaysomboun Province.

Cambodia: Since the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries confirmed the first outbreak in Ratanakiri Province in April 2019, ASF outbreaks were detected in five provinces namely Rottanakikiri, Tbong Khmom, Svayrieng, Takeo and Kandal provinces with the last reported outbreak in August 2019. Between 26 and 28 July 2025, new ASF outbreaks were confirmed  in domestic pigs in village/backyard farms in Siem Reap, Kampong Cham and Battambang provinces.

Thailand: Department of Livestock Development (DLD) announced in January 2022 the confirmation of ASF in pet pigs in Bangkok. A total of 114 outbreaks in 35 out of 77 provinces/special administrative area were reported during the epidemic. The latest reported outbreak occurred in Luang Nuea Village, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province in June 2024.

Myanmar: Since the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation confirmed the first ASF outbreak in August 2019, a total of 12 outbreaks were reported in Shan (8), Kachin (1), Kayah (1) states, and Sagaing Region (2). The last outbreak was reported in August 2023 in Tarchilaik, Shan State near Lao-Myanmar-Thai border .

Bangladesh: The first ASF outbreak in Bangladesh was reported on 21 December 2023 on a government development pig farm located in Rangamati Sadar in Rangamati District, Chittagong Division.

Bhutan: Since the first ASF outbreak occurred in May 2021, ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs have been reported in ten districts, including the detection in wild boars in Bumthang District. In 2025, ASF outbreaks were confirmed Paro, Sarpang, Wangdue Phodrang, Zhemgang, Dagana, Chhukha districts and the latest outbreak in Tsirang District was announced on 8 June 2025.

Nepal: Since the first ASF outbreaks occurred in Kathmandu Valley in March 2022, 44 ASF outbreaks were detected in pig farms in Bagmati, Province No.1, Lumbini, Gandaki, Karnali, Sudurpashchim, and Madhesh provinces. In Koshi Province, ASF cases were detected on four commercial farms in Sunsari District in May 2025; media also reported other outbreaks in Jhapa and Sunsari districts.

India: Since the first ASF outbreaks occurred in Assam State in January 2020, ASF outbreaks have officially been reported in 22 out of its 28 states and National Capital Territory. In 2024, a total of 99 308 pigs died and 51 261 pigs have been destroyed. 

In Mizoram State, where the first ASF case was reported on 21 March 2021, ASF has become endemic. As of 3 August 2025, a total of 69 411 pigs have died due to ASF, along with 52 194 culled, affected 11 382 households, an estimated financial loss of approximately Rs 982.16 crore (approx. 112 million USD). In 2025, ASF outbreak reemerged in Aizawl, Hnahthial, Lunglei, Mamit, Siaha and Khawzawl districts and over 7 000 pigs have died as of 2 August, according to media reports. In Assam State, five epicentres of ASF were identified in 2025 across the districts of Sivasagar, Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Barpeta and Morigaon, the latest outbreak was reported in Rupdiga Village, Bajali District on July 2025, according to media. In Nagaland State, ASF outbreaks was confirmed in Kohima District on 27 June, and in Longleng District on 3 July 2025.

Sri Lanka: The Department of Animal Production and Health declared the confirmation of the first ASF case on 25 October 2024. Initially, ASF was confirmed in Western Province and North Western Province . Meanwhile, over 100 wild boars have been found dead in several forest areas in Southern and Uva provinces, and the samples tested positive for both ASF and PRRS, according to media. On 2 January 2025, additional 135 ASF confirmation on pig farms in 13 districts in 6 out of 9 provinces: Central (2 districts), North Central (2), North Western (2), Sabaragamuwa (2), Uva (2) and Western (3). On 13 June 2025, Director General of Animal Production and Health issued a special gazette, designated all Divisional Secretariat Divisions in Sri Lanka as infected or susceptible areas for ASF. As of 3 July 2025, a total of 67 000 pigs and wild boars have died and at least 1 594 pig farms have been affected by ASF, according to media reports.
