China: Shanghai Airport Opens Dedicated Pet Lounge as Pet-Friendly Travel Gains Momentum

Shanghai has strengthened its position as one of Asia’s most pet-friendly travel hubs with the opening of a dedicated pet lounge at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, offering specialized facilities for passengers travelling with companion animals. The new service reflects the rapid growth of China’s pet economy and increasing demand for pet-inclusive travel experiences.

The dedicated lounge provides separate waiting areas for cats and dogs, temporary pet accommodation, travel guidance services and essential pet-care amenities, enabling owners to prepare their animals comfortably before departure. The initiative is designed to improve both passenger convenience and animal welfare during air travel.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is one of China’s busiest domestic aviation hubs, handling more than 50 million passengers in 2025, making it an ideal location for introducing dedicated pet travel infrastructure.
