One of the most important global developments came from the World Organisation for Animal Health, which released its latest global animal-health assessment warning that:
- disease outbreaks are increasing globally
- veterinary systems remain underfunded
- biosecurity vulnerabilities are widening.
The organization stated that:
- more than 20% of global animal production is lost annually to preventable diseases
- animal health receives less than 0.6% of total global health spending
- approximately 75% of emerging human infectious diseases originate in animals.
WOAH highlighted growing concerns linked to:
- avian influenza
- African swine fever
- foot-and-mouth disease
- antimicrobial resistance
- veterinary workforce shortages.
The report also warned that declining investment in veterinary systems could significantly increase:
- food-security risks
- zoonotic disease exposure
- livestock productivity losses
- global trade disruptions
