WOAH Warns Global Animal Disease Pressure Is Intensifying

One of the most important global developments came from the World Organisation for Animal Health, which released its latest global animal-health assessment warning that:

  • disease outbreaks are increasing globally
  • veterinary systems remain underfunded
  • biosecurity vulnerabilities are widening.

The organization stated that:

  • more than 20% of global animal production is lost annually to preventable diseases
  • animal health receives less than 0.6% of total global health spending
  • approximately 75% of emerging human infectious diseases originate in animals.

WOAH highlighted growing concerns linked to:

  • avian influenza
  • African swine fever
  • foot-and-mouth disease
  • antimicrobial resistance
  • veterinary workforce shortages.

The report also warned that declining investment in veterinary systems could significantly increase:

  • food-security risks
  • zoonotic disease exposure
  • livestock productivity losses
  • global trade disruptions
