Carabeef Exports from India in 2024

According to data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India’s buffalo meat exports for the 2023–2024 fiscal year (April to March) were valued at $3.74 billion. This was an increase over the previous year. This made India one of the largest bovine meat exporters in the world.

Key trends in 2024

• Continued growth: Forecasts from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other sources indicate that both production and exports of buffalo meat, also known as carabeef, were expected to increase in 2024. USDA projections in March 2024 estimated exports for the calendar year to reach 1.64 MT.
• Competitive pricing: Indian buffalo meat remained price-competitive compared to beef from major global exporters like the US, Australia, and Brazil, making it an attractive option for middle- and low-income countries.
• Demand drivers: Rising demand for affordable protein in international markets, along with India’s efficient infrastructure and large water buffalo population, fueled export growth.
• Halal certification: India’s adherence to halal standards is a key factor in its market access, particularly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
